Ten Street Photography Tips and Tricks

Although I prefer to call myself a documentary photographer, street photography is something that I have been doing ever since I started my journey in photography in 1983, since then I have gathered some experience that I want to share with you. Street photography is a popular genre of photography. Here follows ten Tips and Tricks for aspiring Street Photographers:

1. Choose your gear: Decide on the camera and lens you want to use. Many street photographers prefer using small, inconspicuous cameras with a prime lens for its versatility and ease of use in fast-paced environment. Some street photographers prefer to work with zoom lenses which is a more flexible choice. Don't forget to wear good shoes. In street photography, good shoes are almost as important as the camera.
   
   
2. Scout locations: Look for interesting and dynamic locations where people congregate, such as busy streets, markets, parks, or public events. Consider the lighting conditions, background elements, and potential subjects in the scene.
   
   
3. Observe and Be Authentic: Pay attention to your surroundings and look for interesting moments, gestures, expressions, and interactions that tell a story or evoke emotions. Avoid imitating other photographers develop your own personal style instead.
   
   
4. Capture the moment: When you spot a compelling scene or subject, quickly compose your shot and capture the moment. Don't hide in the shadows, be clear about what you are doing. If you give respect you will get it back!
   
   
5. Play with composition: Experiment with Different Techniques: Street photography offers endless opportunities for experimentation. Play with different compositions, angles, and lighting to develop your own distinct style. Consider the use of leading lines, framing elements, and the rule of thirds to create visually pleasing images.
   
   
6. Don't forget the details: Street photography often involves capturing the small details that make up the larger story of a scene. Look for interesting textures, patterns, colors, and unique features that can add depth and interest to your photos.
   
   
7. Be mindful of ethics: Respect people's privacy and boundaries be aware of local laws and cultural sensitivities when photographing in public places. 
   
   
8. Post-processing: Once you have captured your images, review and select the best shots for further post-processing. Consider adjustments to exposure, contrast, and color to enhance the mood and storytelling of your photos. Never add or remove anything from your photos. Image manipulation is never allowed in street photography!
   
   
9. Tell a story: Street photography is often about capturing moments that convey emotions, tell a story, or provide a glimpse into the human experience. Consider sequencing your images or creating a photo essay to convey a narrative or theme. 
   
   
10. Practice Patience and Persistence: Street photography requires patience and persistence to capture the right moments. Don't be afraid to wait for the right light, interesting subjects, or intriguing compositions. Keep shooting regularly, refining your skills, and developing your own style over time.

Remember, developing your own style in street photography is a continuous process that takes time, practice, and self-expression. Embrace your individuality, be true to yourself, and let your creative voice shine through in your street photos.
