The Village that doesn't exist

Follow me to three small Romanian villages in the Pauleasca area from where many of the EU migrants that begs on the streets in the Swedish towns Jönköping, Linköping and Stockholm come from. Pauleasca consists of the villages, Troislav, Tinca and Tufanu and about 4000 persons live in the area.



The people in Pauleasca were given land to live on by the communist regime in the late 1940s. But after the Romanian revolution in late 1989 most of the old documents from the communist era wasn't valid anymore and the vast majority of the houses in the area was considered to be illegal settlements. Today Pauleasca doesn't even exist on official Romanian maps. They are not longer allowed to travel on main roads with horse and carriage due to governmental restrictions. They are not longer allowed to pick branches of willow and birch In their nearby woods to make traditional handicraft like baskets and broom that they can sell on the local market. Since 2012 is begging illegal in Romania.



All those new restrictions paired with a unemployment rate of nearly 80 percent has created a desperate job migration to richer countries in the northern parts of the European Union. Most of the rudari and romani that migrate don't find a work and end up begging for money on the streets in their new countries to be able to support their families back home. The migration from areas like Pauleasca is not a cosmopolitan aspiration towards new horizons, it springs from a desperate struggle for survival for a minority that has been subjected for indifference, discrimination, hostility and racism from the state and ethnic romanians for years and years.



The people in the pictures belong to the rudari minority. Even if they live in Europe their living conditions are down to the same poverty level as people living in third world countries. They have substandard housing. Their life expectancy is 13 years shorter than the average Romanian. They lack running water, proper kitchen, bathroom and toilet. Many of the adults are illiterate but most kids are now in school from grades 1-4. Their food is deficient and many children suffer from malnutrition. Even if the future for the people in the area seems to be painted in dark colours I believe a change is gonna come.

Family Force 5 tryckte på den "galna" knappen

Egentligen var jag alldeles för trött för att gå på konsert, mina fötter värkte och min kropp skrek efter att få komma i säng. Men trots det valde jag att ändå släpa mig till Skeppet i Gullbranna för att se och fotografera crunk-rock bandet Family Force 5 från Atlanta. Redan från det första ackordet var jag fast och jag glömde snabbt mina krämpor och drogs med i musiken. 

Även om jag har haft förmånen att se och fotografera en hel del riktigt bra band i år så är det främst Family Force 5 (FF5) och det svenska bandet Jerusalem som har etsat sig fast på min näthinna. Alla vi som valde att skippa matchen mellan Nederländerna och Costa Rica i VM fick istället se en riktigt grym konsert och fick uppleva hur Skeppet på Gullbrannafestivalen exploderade i en ren och skär energikaskad. Det var första gången som Chap Stique, Crouton, Fatty, Nadaddy och Hollywood i Family Force 5 spelade på Gullbranna.



Family Force 5 framträdande imponerade på mig och de tryckte in sin "Cray Button" från det allra första ackordet. De bjöd på en grym scenshow med mycket närvaro och den stora publiken var helt med på noterna. Showen var skruvad och lite galen och levererades med en stor portion glädje. Att showen var galen är inte så konstigt med tanke på att "Cray" är slang för crazy eller galen som det heter på svenska. "Hit the Cray Button" betyder ungefär att man ska trycka på den galna knappen! Jag hoppas verkligen att det inte var sista gången som de spelade i Sverige och Gullbranna. FF5 bjöd helt klart på den vildaste, galnaste och klart bästa spelningen på Gullbranna och jag ser dem mer än gärna igen.



Family Force 5 grundades av bröderna Solomon "Soul Glow Activatur", Joshua "Fatty" och Jacob "Crouton" Olds. Family Force 5 har en lång och framgångsrik historia med fyra studioalbum, två remixer, 9 EPs och många livespelningar i bagageluckan. Förra året valde Solomon att kliva av bandet och låta sin bror Jacob ta hand om sången och Teddy Bolt "Hollywood" tog istället hand om trummorna. Jag gillar den typen av musik som FF5 spelar, trots att jag använde ett 17 mm till de flesta bilderna hade jag ändå svårt att få alla bilderna helt skarpa på grund av att det var helt omöjligt för mig att stå stilla när de spelade låtarna Chainsaw, Cray Button, BZRK och Zombie! :)
