Canon, the company which completely ruled the full-frame market for years, still has no equivalent to the D700 in their product line.
If you are a Canon full-frame user, you either have to choose between the 5D -- which is really just a hot rod kluge -- a big sensor jammed into a mediocre 30D body with outdated AF, and a $7000 1DSMkIII, which is so expensive that many professionals (it's target market) forgo it because it's not cost-effective to own.
Meanwhile, Nikon has several great full-frame options at prices well below $7000 -- cameras that are fully-baked, well-executed designs. So does Sony.
So it is inconceivable to me that Canon would put all the goodness that is the 7D into a crop-sensor camera, while continuing to fail to address the professional and advanced amateur market that wants a full-frame camera that is better than the 5DMkII, but costs less than the 1DsMkIII.
Either a full-frame 7D is just around the corner, or Canon is handing a vital portion of the camera market to Nikon and Sony on a silver platter.
