Sony Announces Name of its D-SLR System

Sony, which had previously announced plans to enter the digital SLR market, has just announced the nomenclature of its new digital SLR line. Taking a page from the singer Prince's playbook, the new system will be represented by α, the Greek symbol for alpha. According to a company spokesperson, the branding builds on the existing use of alpha as the Konica-Minolta brand in Asia; and, Sony is trying to "bridge the tradition and infuse the brand name with new meaning" (namely, that Alpha means "beginning" and "essential" as per the press release). The company plans to provide camera bodies, lenses, and accessories under this new brand; however, no new products have been announced at this time.
As expected, the new" system will leverage the Konica-Minolta Maxxum lens mount system, which Sony assumed after Konica-Minolta exited the photography business earlier this year. According to Sony, Konica-Minolta’s existing lenses and accessories will be compatible with the new D-SLR cameras."
