"We picked up a D300, mounted an SB-800 flash on it and then set about the menu system doing the following.
1. Enabled Auto ISO feature
2. Set maximum ISO value of 3200
3. Set minimum shutter speed of 1/160 sec
4. Set the camera to aperture priority mode at f/4
5. Set the lens wide and pointed it so that a window (exterior) and the room interior were in frame.
6. Dialed in a starting ISO of 200 as our base level.
7. Set the SB-800 to iTTL BL FP mode
8. Took the shot.
9. Reviewed the image and shooting data on the LCD.
What we saw was that the camera had ramped up the ISO value to 550 and, in doing so, we had a perfectly balanced exposure between the outdoors daylight scene and the flash-lit room interior.
I stress that this was a quick and dirty test that appeared to confirm that the D3 and D300 Auto ISO feature behaves in the way that you want it to. Certainly the Nikon tech said that it *wouldn't* have worked in this way on a D2X and, since I've never tried to do so, I had to take his word for it."
