- To sum it up as briefly as possible,
The EU is not really about free trade, it poses that way but it is deceptive. All EU countries have a yearly import/export limit; after this limit is breached then the counties start to charge their own Vat on all transactions. Normally, (with any other EU country) this would mean that rather than you paying UK Vat, you would pay Swedish Vat on the order instead. Sweden however, decided to make their own special rules and say that UK vat is not “real” vat and we would have to pay them Swedish Vat, on top of the UK Vat inclusive price! this would mean charging customers 40% Vat!
To make matters worse, Sweden have one of the lowest limits in the Eu (if not the lowest) meaning it is very easy to go over that amount in one year. We did not know about any of this for a long period of time, and we were not told by anyone about this. It seems that all this is not common knowledge.
What actually happened was that the Swedish tax authorities let us breach the limit (by a large margin) for two whole years, without saying anything at all. Then all of a sudden they slapped us with a MASSIVE bill for tax, and threatened legal action if we did not pay; in addition to this they demanded interest be paid on top of this amount because it had not been paid for two years. At this point we could obviously not go back and ask all the Swedish customers of two years to pay another 20% of their order value on top!
The result of this was a colossal bill, which for us a small business was very hard to bear in times when things are very tough anyway. This amount was the key factor in that Robert had to make 3 people redundant, taking us down to a team of just 3.5 people.
We are grateful for your interest in the business, but at this time we are not set up to deal with Vat inclusive orders to Sweden. In addition the lens would cost you an additional 20% because you government do not consider UK Vat to be “real” (their words)"
