Persongalleriet #749: Nick Cave and Notting Hill Carnival, part 3

Yesterday, me and Sam, my youngest son, went down to Stockholm to see and listen to Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Didn't bring a camera to Stockholm and not even the phone into Stockholm Globe Arena, where the concert was. I wanted to concentrate on the show and we were far away from the stage anyway.
What a show!!! So so powerful: heavy rocking songs, meganoise, soft piano playing in a great dynamic mix. Sometimes even all of these elements in just one song.
To compensate for the lack of freshly shot photos a bit, here are links to the blog posts I wrote after we saw this band in the US back in 2014. A different experience completely, since we stood right in front of the stage. Post 1 in B&W and post 2 in colour.

Well, this is a photo blog after all, so I'll show some more photos from Notting Hill Carnival also!  :-)

A lot of green colour in this carnival, in a show of respect for the Grenfell tower victims and their families.

Två dagar senare var vi i Louisville, Kentucky och såg Nick Cave igen. Då från en "säker" plats på balkongen. Återigen en fantastisk spelning som gav rysningar i hela kroppen. Tog inte med kameran dock...

Persongalleriet #142: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Bonnaroo, 14th of June 2014

Tillresta från Europa, hade vi valt just Bonnaroo, bland alla festivaler, utifrån att Nick Cave skulle spela där.

Själv har jag lyssnat på Nick Cave sedan '96 då albumet "Murder Ballads" med singeln "Where the Wild Roses Grow", där Kylie Minogue sjunger tillsammans med Nick, fångade min uppmärksamhet. Ungefär sedan '05 har jag lyssnat mer intensivt på hans skivor och hans låtar har figurerat flitigt i mina spellistor och blandskivor. Tipsade mina barn om hans musik och sonen Sam har haft honom som en av sina favoriter sedan 14-årsåldern, för fem år sedan.

Vi prioriterade bort Jack White, känd från, bland annat, The White Stripes, för att få en bra plats nära scenen till Nick Cave. Vi var där redan två timmar innan och bredde ut vår filt mitt framför scenen. En handful människor hade hunnit före oss, så vi var inte allra längst fram, men nästan. Fler människor anlände allt eftersom och fler filtar breddes ut. Till slut var det dags och spelningen drog igång.

Traveling from Europe, we chose Bonnaroo in particular, out of all the festivals, since Nick Cave was going to play there.

I've been listening to Nick Cave since '96 when "Murder Ballads" came out with the hit single "Where the Wild Roses Grow", where Kylie Minogue sings along with Nick, and this song caught my attention. Since around '05 I've listened more frequently to his records and his songs have often been included in my playlists and mix CD:s. I played his music to my kids and my son Sam became a big fan at the age of 14, which was five years ago.

We chose to skip Jack White, to get a good spot close to the stage for Nick Cave. We were there two hours ahead of the show and spread our blanket a few yards from mid-stage. A handful of people had gotten there ahead of us, so we were not right up front, but almost. More people arrived by the minute and more blankets were spread out. Finally it was time and the show started.

Det började med en bedrägligt lugn låt, "We No Who U R", men det gick inte att ta miste på den underliggande intensiteten i framträdandet. Låten inleder även det senaste albumet "Push the Sky Away".

It started with a deceptively calm song, "We No Who U R", but the underlying intensity in the performance was obvious. This song also starts off the latest album, "Push the Sky Away".

Nästa låt var "Jubilee Street", också från senaste albumet. Den började lugnt, men med en oerhörd intensitet i Nicks framträdande som sedan matchades fullt ut i ett musikaliskt crescendo! En video av detta finns här. Ljudet i videon är väldigt överstyrt, men man får verkligen en känsla av hur nästan manisk stämningen var. Efter denna urladdning kände jag mig upprymd, på gränsen till chocktillstånd. Kombinationen av musikens hypnotiska tyngd, artistens besatthet och mitt tillfälle att få fotografera detta från bästa tänkbara position, tror jag var det som hade sådan inverkan på mig.

The next song was "Jubilee Street", also from the latest album. It began rather quietly, but with an enormous intensity to Nick's performance, which was then matched in full in a musical crescendo. You can find a video of this here. The sound is very distorted, but you really get feel for how there was an almost manic atmosphere. After the song I felt exhilarated, almost in chock. I think it was the hypnotic heaviness of the music, the possessed artist and also the possibility for me to photograph this from the best possible vantage point, that had this effect on me.

I de följande låtarna kan man inte påstå att glöden falnade direkt. Snarare tvärtom. "Tupelo", från 1985, och "Red Right Hand", från 1994, är klassiker ur Nick Caves tidigare repertoar. I en video släppt som reklam för den kommande turnén i nordamerika pratar Nick om sin publikkontakt. Hur han söker upp och agerar direkt gentemot de som står just framför scenen. En-mot-en-konserten. Att ta direkt ögonkontakt och även fysisk kontakt med en enda person i publiken. Detta var något vi fick uppleva på Bonnaroo. Killen som stod direkt till vänster om mig, en muskulös, flintskallig man med en "Bad Seed"-T-shirt fick agera fysiskt stöd när Nick klättrade upp på staketet och lutade sig fram, långt förbi den punkt där hans tyngdpunkt skulle ha skickat ner honom på golvet bland publiken, om det inte vore för stödet. Under fortsatt framförande av låtarna. Det här var enda gången under festivalen då deras restriktioner om max 50 mm (två tum) långa objektiv fick mig att önska mer vidvinkel och inte mer tele.

I wouldn't say that the fire was out during the following songs. Rather the opposite. "Tupelo", from 1985, and "Red Right Hand", from 1994, are classics from Nick Cave's back catalogue. In a  promotional video for the upcoming tour of North America, Nick speaks of the one-on one contact he seeks in his shows and the tension it creates. We got to experience this at Bonnaroo. The guy standing to my left, a bald muscular guy in a "Bad Seed" T-shirt, got the job to be Nick's main physical support for the night.

Nick then leaned far across the point where he would fall flat onto the floor into the crowd if it wasn't for this support. All the while continuing to sing the songs. This was the only time where Bonnaroos rule of a max of 2 inch lenses made me wish for more wide angle and not for more telephoto.
