Nikon Nikkor 80-200/2,8 AIS

Summering

This is the first Nikkor in the xx-200/2.8 class produced. Only around 1600 were produced from 1982-86. Manual focusing is aided by the appropriately damped zoom/focus ring with the lens exhibiting parfocal properties such that one may zoom in to the maximum tele position to focus and the. Zoom out to compose. The zoom/focus ring tends not to rotate in the process of recomposing aiding manual focus greatly. I tried the lens on both the Olympus E-3 and the Nikon V1 (with adapters) and very bridfly on a Canon 1Ds III. On the E-3, manual focusing was actually quite easy as the high magnification at 400mm equiv coupled with a relatively contrasty matt screen on the E-3. Resolution was impressive even at f/2.8, beating the Olympus 50-200 at 200mm, though slightly less sharp at 135mm at f/2.8. Contrast was a little low, especially at f/2.8, however. The major drawback was both chromatic abberation and longitudinal chromatic abberation which did not improve dramatically on stopping down even to F/5.6. Handholding and focusing was actually quite possible. On the V1, with a 2.7x cropfactor, sharpness was still impressive even at f/2.8. In most raw converters and in JPEG, the V1 corrects the CA with some deteriaration of peak sharpness as a result. LoCA was quite pronounced at this pixel density. Focusing manually was more difficult on the EVF of the V1 and live view and a tripod is recommended.

Manual focusing on the 1DsIII was, surprisingly, more difficult on the 1DsIII, probably at least partially related to the standard laser-matt ground glass in the viewfinder being optimimised for slower lenses.

For many uses, this lens still works wonders, but the single ED lens shows its age in the CA and LoCA, limiting its use.
