WInterrail into the 20s, each stop posted on the same day...3 months later

WInterrail - 3 & 4 January 2020 (Kiel & travelling home)

My interrail trip last summer (2019) gave a taste for more.
This time, I have written about my trip on  https://karinblomblom.wordpress.com/

Accompanying below pictures, I have sometimes cited (in italic) a few lines from my "wordblog"  and sometimes there is instead a new supplementary text.

When a Euro coin caught up with me in Kiel.

Leaving Kiel for a windy night at sea.

Seeing the interior of my cabin, reminds me of the nightly cracks, probably originating from the cabin table...

...and how reassuring a breaking dawn can feel.

Trying to catch the first possible train home, I was one of the first touching steady ground & heading for the tram to the central station.

Even though I love the feeling of anticipating a trip, coming home is also special. It can be sitting still in your seat while your fellow passengers start getting their luggage, only to prolongue your trip just a little bit more , looking out, seeing the familiar station and knowing that standing in my own shower and sleeping in my own bed is also a very good thing!...

WInterrail - 2 January 2020 (Lübeck)

My interrail trip last summer (2019) gave a taste for more.

For those eager to learn about the sites, below links lead to the corresponding reading at the tourist information pages.

Leaving Hamburg for Lübeck.

Holsten gate, the symbol of Lübeck

I sometimes tilt my camera/mobile just to get as much as possible into the picture, this time with a part of the huge and beautiful town hall and a little slice of Niederegger...

Obviously, I'm not the only one keen on Marzipan... ;-)

The Hospital of the Holy Spirit

Catching the light at Königstraße...

Charming cups saying "New York is the town where no one sleeps. Luckily we are in Lübeck"

After a difficult choice among many temptations, I opted for this marzipan and nougat roll with my cappuccino.

What could a Marzipan beef taste like... Perhaps like Marzipan?

Holsten gate by night

I stayed there for about two hours for the calm atmosphere, looking back on the past days with joy and writing about my trip that was now approaching its end.

...I crossed the open space where I had followed the fireworks the night before, now bearing untidy reminiscences from the festivities

When thinking back on this day, the mist of the morning and afternoon plays an important role as it heightened the clear colours of for instance a yellow boat by the shore or the blue bar by a deserted café.

Being New Year’s morning, Hamburg Altona was a very quiet place...

Except for loving the Art Nouveau style, it seems I am also becoming a railway station nerd. If it is not for the art of the station,...

...it’s for the anticipation of travelling…

Deichstraße

The next point on my best plums list was Chilehaus which lightened up in the grey mist with all its lights and beautiful architecture

I was so impressed by Chilehaus and with the special light of the mist, I couldn't stop myself from taking lots of photos from which 9 more are found in my portfolio

WInterrail - 31 December 2019 (Hamburg)

We were only 4 in the bus, Die roten Doppeldecker, waiting for the guide and once arrived he sat down together with us which provided for a really nice and familiar touch to the guiding tour.

"American fruit shop" (According to the guide in the hop on hop off bus Die roten Doppeldecker).

After having seen the town from the hop on hop off bus, giving me a hint of what I wanted to see more closely, I started by taking a look at the town hall.

A year ago, I took the beginner’s course in German and now I followed in the traces of the first of the textbooks Lieber Deutsch 2.0, walking through the shopping center “Europa passage” of Mönckebergstraße.

My next aim was strolling around in the port and Speicherstadt, which I did, with an increasing hunger for lunch though. Having the habit of only paying with my card in Swedeen, my walking tour all of a sudden got the goal of finding an ATM. Cash is king and entering the ATM room can be hard work as you need to enter in the same time as a customer of the bank who's credit card is also an access card...

The Elbphilharmonie, a costly and criticized project due to the increased cost and delays (Elbphilharmonie on Wikipedia).

My much longed-for Fischbrötchen (sandwich with salt herring) and Fritz-kola in the warehouse district (Speicherstadt). What could be more Hamburg for a lunch?

Spitaler Straße

I realized that sleeping would not be an option due to all the fireworks and decided instead to admire the view from my safe haven in the hotel room.

A healthy breakfast is vital for a good day and this one was enjoyed at the cosy place Nelle's Overgade where I also had dinner the previous night.

Before leaving Odense for Hamburg, I took a walk to the nougat and marzipan factory.

Thinking it was worth a try, I rang the bell and was welcomed by a kind man, answering my questions: No, there was no factory outlet. And no, they did not offer any visiting tours. At least I had seen the place…

A while later, I was one among the contemplative train window outlookers for the next three hours...

When the train slowed down, I was already stuck by a window, luggage ready beside me, taking pictures.

Here again finally and this time not only to change trains....

The hotel I had booked, Europäischer Hof, happened to be a real treasure! I fell in love with my room facing on to a small road and showing a glimpse of the open space outside the central station... (And such a suiting room for someone who loves going by train. Hint: photo above bed... )

Arriving about 4 pm, I soon could admire a golden sky from the setting sun.

Christmas decorations at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof.

To my great satisfaction, I came across my favorite fast and healthy food chain that I know from Berlin, Dean & David, and once again energized, I returned to the hotel doing a bit of a homework to prepare for the guide tour the following day, a lucky decision as it turned out!
